If social media is bad for you, why do you want to be an influencer?

Should I?

I recently watched an episode of Caleb Hammer’s financial audit of a guest, which sparked me to write this post and ask myself the question — why does one want to be a social media influencer when we all know social media is bad for us?

In that Caleb Hammer Financial Audit episode, he didn’t appreciate the guest’s desire of wanting to be an influencer at a young age (mid-20s) and sell courses or merchandise online. I finished watching the episode, there was so much more to discuss than the financial situation the guest was in. I can’t help but wonder, why does the guest want to be an influencer? The guest’s response was to be able to just do whatever he/she wanted, with incomes to supply their lifestyles. Yes, I know the viewpoint is naive, but the question is why does he/she think it’s the right career choice?

If I zoom out at a macro level, social media infiltrate our modern lives. Depending on your job, you look at social media during your work hours, and off hours as well. So it leaves you like…8 hours (maybe — if you are the lucky ones that get full 8 hours of sleep every night) without being bombarded by social media. Social media consumption habits vary depending on individuals, but we know how much our social media consumption is (it’s a lot).
